Local Lifestyle

The pleasant seaboard weather enhances the picturesque suburban calm of Alameda. The island is easy to navigate with many convenient transportation choices – from bus and ferry to bicycling, walking, or driving. Residents are just a 10-minute drive from Oakland International Airport and nine miles from Berkeley University. You may wish to while away your days walking the beaches or sailing. The Seaplane Lagoon Waterfront Park opened at the new Alameda Point mixed-use project – a transit-focused development at the former Naval Air Station.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

You will find an array of artisan distilleries and tasting rooms at Spirits Alley in Alameda Point. Savor the finest-crafted drinks in a distinct design of historic buildings and oversized airplane hangars. Try their Hangar 1 Vodka– made with fresh ingredients in season. For every variety of drink, St. George Spirits is a local stand-out for single malt whiskey, absinthe, and several gins, vodkas, brandies, and liqueurs. Building 43 Winery produces memorable small-batch varietals from the Sierra Foothills.

When you are in downtown Park Street, try Homeskillet – a classic American eatery with old-fashioned doughnuts, breakfasts, and buttery sandwiches. Top it off with Tuckers Ice Cream – the creamy, old-fashioned kind served since 1941. Both stops have fans from all over the Bay area. And when you’re in the mood for a large mall atmosphere, head to Alameda South Shore Center, an open-air mix of national and local businesses. Alameda makes shopping a breeze,  from modern shops to old-fashioned storefronts.

Things to Do

Alameda’s many bays and inlets are filled with desirable yacht and boat clubs. BAE has boats with 100% electric, emissions-free engines. You can go sailing at Club Nautique or enroll in their award-winning powerboating school. Avid golfers head for Corica Park – ranked the 12th best municipal course in the nation by Golf Magazine, with a minimalist Australian sandbelt-style design.

Every month, on the first Sunday, you can see the largest antique show in northern California at the Alameda Point Antiques Faire. Many residents have made it a tradition. When you take the Alameda Legacy Home Tour, you will discover the architectural styles of over 400 buildings back to the 1800s and registered on the Historic Study list. The tour has been going on since 1973. For a perfect view of the San Francisco skyline, a spin around the border of Bay Farm Island at Shoreline Park is the place to go.
